Street Arts in Penang, Malaysia

One of the highlights of this Penang trip is the Street Arts. Most of the street arts were done by an artist named Ernest Zacharevic in 2012 during George Town Festival. They are located at almost every corner of George Town. I was amazed by his works, especially its intricate details. As mentioned in my previous post (3D2N Adventure in Penang, Malaysia), we spent the entire afternoon searching for street arts!

Below is a map of the locations of Penang's street arts.

Let me start with the murals first, starting with my top 3 favourites!

3D2N Adventure in Penang, Malaysia

Taken from asiaexplorers.com

Traveling is always fun with the right company! This time, I travelled together with Celia, Swee Yen and her husband, Ian! We had so much fun eating and exploring the place. Most importantly, we got to know one another better! :)

P.S. I'll only include the addresses & maps for places I recommend!

Sunway Hotel

We had a comfortable stay at Sunway Hotel which is located at George Town. There were eateries nearby and a taxi stand at the entrance of our hotel. Thumbs up for convenience and access to food! :D

Address: 33, New Lane (Off Macalister Road), Georgetown, 10400 Penang, Malaysia
Tel: +60 4 229 9988
Fax: +60 4 228 8899
Website: Sunway Hotel

The view from our room.
We actually had partial sea view!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 1

After we have checked into our rooms, we headed for lunch at a restaurant (Yi Xiang Bah Kut Teh) nearby.

There is a wide variety of food available but we decided to go ahead with their 4 pax set menu.

After filling our stomachs, we started exploring George Town! :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Camera Museum

Address: 49 Lebuh Muntri, Penang 10300.
Opening hours: (Mon - Sun) 9.30a.m. - 18.30p.m.

There are many camera exhibits displayed in this shophouse. With vintage cameras as old as (or even older than) 100 years old, we saw how cameras transcended over the years. I managed to spot an old Samsung flip phone which I used 10 years ago! There is a camera-inspired merchandise which sells souvenirs too.

We did not have our unique shots taken but the photos look very interesting!

Gone are the days when films were used.

From left: Swee Yen, Celia

From left: Ian, Swee Yen

We walked through a series of wedding photos which captured my heart, particularly these two photographs in the picture below. :)

I spotted my Samsung phone here as mentioned earlier! Do you manage to spot something which you once used?

There is a cafe that sells food such as nasi lemak, snacks and drinks too.
The evolution of cameras (which we gave a miss) can be seen upstairs and the entrance fee is RM20.

I would say this is a place for photography enthusiasts!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Chocolate & Coffee Museum

Address: 22 Lebuh Leith, George Town, 10200 Penang, Malaysia
Opening hours: 8.00a.m. - 7.00p.m. daily
Tel: +60 4-250 2488

Let me show you the mini-museum first.

Check out the chocolate consumption in various countries!

The chocolate machine.

Hmm. I learnt something new about coffee and chocolate!

That's the end of the chocolate museum and the rest are just chocolates, chocolates and more chocolates that we can purchase. I wouldn't call it a museum but a shop that sells many chocolates, ranging from milk chocolates to dark chocolates to durian chocolates and many other flavors which I have never seen before. Samples of chocolates were placed in front of each kind of chocolate. The 'tour guide' ended up feeding us with so many chocolate samples that we told him we can't take in anymore. That was how generous he was. Haha. They sell souvenirs and gift sets too.

This is a good place for chocolate lovers and a good escape from the heat outside as it is air-conditioned. Not a must-vist place but if you want to kill time, you can drop by this place.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ais Tingkap

Address: Lebuh Tamil/Tamil Street, Georgetown, Penang.
Opening hours: (Monday to Saturday) 12.00p.m. - 8.00p.m.

Ais Tingkap

Ais Tingkap, also known as Window Sherbet, is a refreshing rose colored dessert drink with basil seeds and coconut flesh. This drink is famous and only available in Penang. I read it somewhere that it has health benefits too! I found its taste unique, something I have never tasted before. Drinking it (especially the shaved ice above) under the scorching hot summer weather is simply divine! As you can see in the picture below, it is only RM2.00!

Besides Ais Tingkap, there is a stall which sells Cucur Udang for RM2.40 too!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendol

Address: 27 Lebuh Keng Kwee, Georgetown, 10100 Penang
Opening hours: (Mon - Fri) 10.30a.m. - 7.00p.m.
                             (Sat & Sun) 10.00am - 7.30p.m.
Tel: +604 262 6002

Before I start blogging about this stall, I must inform that there is another restaurant nearby that sells Teochew Chendol too! It made us confused as we did not know which was the authentic and famous stall. Thankfully, we ate from the right stall! So, look out for the above pushcart!

Recognize our Singapore actor and actress on the top left picture? :)

This is my first time eating Chendol to be honest. Well, since I am in Penang, I came with an open mind and told myself to try all local food here! At that point in time, I was already feeling so hot and the Chendol looked more appealing than ever. I have nothing to compare against so I would say that the Chendol had a subtle taste. It wasn't as sweet as I expected (I have a sweet tooth). My friends thought that it tasted nice but not wondrous. Definitely a good dessert to quench our thirst though!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gurney Drive Hawker Centre

Address: 172 Solok Gurney 1, Georgetown, Jelutong, Pulau Pinang Malaysia
Opening hours: 6.30p.m. - 11.00p.m.

Gurney Drive Hawker Centre, also known as Pusat Penjaja Anjung Gurney, is one of the famous hawker centres in Penang! It is located just beside Gurney Plaza. We got there around 8.00p.m. and it was very crowded. The stalls were split into 2 sections, Halal stalls and non-Halal stalls. We were spoilt for choices! Everything looks delicious. We decided to order different dishes to share and our favourite dish is the Fried Kway Teow! It is soooooo good that we came back on the second night just for that! It is a MUST-TRY. Even after we flew back to Singapore, we still crave for it.

On our first night..

& on our second night…

One plate of Fried Kway Teow each!
The chicken skin tasted good too! Another MUST-TRY.

In case you are wondering which stall we bought them from, here they are.

Photo was taken when their Char Kway Teow were sold out! Lucky us were their last customers! You should have seen our relieved faces when we made it just in time for this. We actually ran to this stall in fear that it would have closed by then. Haha. Anyway, the queue for this never ends and we spent a good 15 minutes just to get our food on both nights.

& this is where we bought the fried chicken skin.

Don't forget to try these two dishes when you are there! :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 2

After a good night's rest, it's time to explore Penang again! We decided to locate as many Street Arts as possible and we managed to do so under Swee Yen's and Ian's determination! *salute* We conquered almost the entire George Town in one day. We were feeling so hot, sticky and tired after 6 hours of walking under the hot sun. Thank god for the invention of umbrellas and sunblocks, though it wasn't of much use, especially sheltering from bird shit. Hahahahaha. Can you imagine someone holding an umbrella under the shade and still having bird shit dropping on that person's leg? How is that even possible? I'm not saying who that (un)lucky one is. So funny that we burst out laughing for so long! :DDD

I've blogged about the Street Arts here: Streets Arts In Penang, Malaysia !

So, along the way…...

70's ICE

Address: 78 Lebuh Armenian, 10200 Georgetown, Penang.
Opening hours: (Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri) 10.00a.m. - 6.00p.m.
                             (Sat) 9.30a.m. - 8.30p.m.
                             (Sun) 9.30a.m. - 6.00p.m.
Tel: 016-470 3038

70's Ice is located right in front of an Art House. This is my first time eating an Ice ball! I shall let the photos and video do the talking.

 The 6 different flavours available.

Here's a video of the process of making ice ball!

Enjoying our 4 inches wide ice balls!

The ice balls come in two sizes - 4 inches and 6 inches in diameter. We went ahead with 1 syrup but we are allowed to mix 2 different flavors of syrup together too! Besides the ice ball, we found another street art right beside it, as seen in the picture above! Stop by if you happen to be there. :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Penang Laksa

Address: 8 Lebuh Armenian, Georgetown, 10300 Pulau Pinang

Feeling hungry, we stopped by a coffeeshop and gave their Penang Laksa a try. It is located directly opposite the Street Art 'Little Children on a Bicycle'. The interior design of the coffeeshop brings us back to the olden days where 'curry puff' hairs and old music disc records were popular.

Their menu.

I'm in love with their Penang Laksa!

The Penang laksa had a unique taste, both sour and spicy. I particularly love the soup! Too bad I was saving my stomach for dinner or else I would have ordered another 2 bowls. I wished the serving was a little bigger though. I'll definitely come back for it again!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Batu Ferringhi Beach

Address: Jalan Ferringhi, 11200 Batu Ferringhi, Penang Malaysia

Batu Ferringhi Beach is the most popular beach in Penang. It is situated along the coastal road, north-west of Georgetown. There are many resorts and restaurants along the beach and activities such as horse-riding, parasailing and surfing can be done there. We went there in the evening and were mesmerized by the beautiful sunset!

My loves.

Gorgeous.

Then, we strolled along the coastal road to search for a place to have dinner (and not forgetting our supper at Gurney Drive later in the night). Here are some shops that we saw along the way.

We settled our dinner here!

My cravings for Bah Kut Teh. It tasted good.

Stingray.

Bee Hoon.

Yup, that's the end of our trip to Batu Ferringhi Beach! :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 3

We had Dim Sum for breakfast!

So many varieties of food, but it wasn't to our likings.
Nonetheless, we filled our stomachs and it's time for our next adventure! :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Penang Time Tunnel (3D Mural Art Street)

Address: 39 Jalan Green Hall, 10200 George Town, Malaysia

Email: pghistorymuseum@gmail.com

Penang time tunnel shows us the series of events, in chronological order, that took place in Penang 400 hundreds years ago. The entire place is air-conditioned. We felt like we're having a history / social studies lesson because we saw some photographs/information which were found in the Primary Social Students textbook. Bear with me as I spam our crazy photos here!

History Museum -> 3D Mural Art -> Fluorescence Room -> 3D Inverted Room

Spot the similarities between the SS book and the information behind!
P.S. Don't ask me why we had the book with us. :D

These shoes are smaller than our palms!

Penang's transformation.

Shooting an advertisement?

(I miss those days a lot.)

Drama king and queen.

 Unglam pose 1.

 Unglam pose 2.

Enjoying like a boss.

Look at what Ian is trying to do. Hahaha.

?!?

Trying to train our arm muscles which watching television.

Defying gravity.

& we're finally done after spending more than an hour in there! Special thanks to the photographers who were at the various stations to help us take photographs! :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kek Lok Si Temple

Address: 11500 Ayer Itam, Penang
Opening hours: 9.00a.m. - 6.00p.m. daily
Tel: 04-828 3371

Kek Lok Si Temple is said to be the largest Buddhist temple in Southeast Asia. It consists of several large prayer halls and pavilions for assembly and prayer. There are many statues of Buddha and an enormous Guan Yin (Goddess of Mercy) statue made of bronze on the hill top. We had to take an Inclined Lift from the main temple level. The website I gave above have more information about its history which I will not go into detail here.

We had to pay RM6 per person (to and fro) in order to take the inclined lift.

Panorama view from the top.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

That marks the end of our Penang trip and I will definitely be back again for its food! Traveling with them is so fun and hopefully, we can have another trip together again! Looking forward.

Love,
CY
